Objective
The objective of ChangeCamp Halifax,
like the other ChangeCamps going on across the country, is to facilitate public
participation through new relationships and new media. Our mission is to
provide a forum where engaged citizens can collaborate with a goal of
establishing new ideas, new networks, and new tools to resolve issues that
Halifax faces today and will face in the future. ChangeCamp is intended to be
action- and solutions-oriented and non-partisan.
ChangeCamp
101
ChangeCamp strives
to encourage public participation enabled by new forms of communication, e.g.
digital media and social networking. Through providing a medium that will bring
together engaged citizens, policymakers, community designers, and politicians,
facilitated by web developers and the tech community, ChangeCamp brings about
the opportunity for these groups to form collaborative new relationships.
ChangeCamp
Halifax
Given
successive record lows in voter turnout in Nova Scotia, ChangeCamp seeks to put
forth new ideas on reversing this trend by tapping into its diverse
participants’ creativity and expertise. ChangeCamp Halifax will be an exciting
opportunity for Haligonians, opinion leaders,
planners, web developers, bureaucrats, and our elected officials to work
together in constructive and non-partisan breakout sessions to break down
barriers and identify new solutions.

The
info session is a series of several short presentations on subjects like the
political process and how decisions are made. They will be purely informational
and are intended to enrich discussion throughout the remainder of the day,
providing background and context to issues facing Halifax.
Breakout sessions (several running
concurrently) are pre-populated by participants who see a need to discuss a
specific issue. They are intended to answer a specific question, e.g. “What
changes would you like to see in the area of sustainable transportation,
community housing, transparency in public information, poverty alleviation,
etc.?” These sessions seek to stimulate discussion, identify barriers and
challenges, and begin to envision possible solutions.
During the
action sessions in the afternoon, participants discuss specific strategies or
lay the groundwork for tools (web or otherwise) to address issues raised in the
open space breakout sessions. The primary objective of the action sessions is
to allow participants to determine how these discussions can progress in the
weeks and months following ChangeCamp.
