****unedited***** -When the internet can build so much fear of each other and the predators that are out there, how can we engageà website called my street you can talk online with people that live on your street and have your community online rather than an online community, geographical community does have some significant. Social media can be used to miss-representation ones self. But rather how do we use the web to develop trust so we can let our kids play outside again. Could it be that things are no better or worse than they ever were but because of the media we are more aware of the danger and thus we are paranoid. We used to have the “block parent” program, and this concept might be able to develop online. There are currently police sites that show where have crimes been committed within a neighbourhood. There is some evidence to show that more TV watching in people links to feeling unsafe in your community. Can we move this over to the new age paranoia about talking to strangers because of ID theft etc. Don’t talk to strangers has extended to adults in person and we should talk casually to each other in depth for fear of them having to much information. If we don’t do it in person then it seems we wouldn’t do it online, so it decreases the value of social interaction online. When we create in group out group bias of trust can the web be used to expand our concept of the community and feel as though we have some association with each other. For example the social media could expose the verbal slip of a major leader, but that could be a good thing if it humanizes them. -It may be possible to more directly criticise corporations and try to hold them responsible for the products they provide to consumers. -The bombardment of information that could be right or wrong means we have to develop a better ability to be sceptical. -Specific to neighbourhoods can teach people to know their neighbours and do things like car pool, get out of the house, let their children play together and socialize. -More resources like borrow me.com where people can share resources. Not everyone needs to own their own lawn mower, etc. -How can we centralize social media and web resources and center them to our local communities and geographical areas. Design portals that contain application like borrow me and my streets, discussion about event or drop in soccer. -We need a central hub you can access based on where you are, that brings in all the things people are using online, to be able to use one outlet that will communicate out to all the communication forums. The is only so much time in a day to check all the different information and communication sources one person might be using online. GEO pedia.
