Preserving Accountability JournalismFrom $1Table of contentsNo headersNoted that everyone
should watch video from Clay Shirky about role of journalism: http://www.niemanlab.org/2009/09/clay-shirky-let-a-thousand-flowers-bloom-to-replace-newspapers-dont-build-a-paywall-around-a-public-good/ Main Question: Can,
or will, there be room for a non-profit model of journalism? Can it provide
news coverage? This one is not solved.
Lots of questions came about in this
discussion. Is there investigative journalism
because the public demands it. If public doesn’t demand it will the current
private, for-profit, model bother? If the
for-profit model of journalism wants to survive perhaps a shift in advertising
and revenue streams is required. Does a paper need to be physically printed
7-days a week? Will people still read once a week? Is the Internet ready to
take over minor daily news and events. Can a
non-profit panel or trust fund build trust in the public to provide journalism? There are
such panels and trusts emerging. Another model is one where the reporter or
news organization offers up a topic to be covered and asks for
funding/donations. It was also thought that news organizations can't charge extra to keep things behind an online pay wall. Let people decide what really is the most imporant news, the news that they feel is vital.
