Communities go through different phases. In this phase we are exploring possibilities. A community that is a group that gets together for a common cause. There are bonding communities and blocking communities. Inclusive communities vs exclusive communities. What are communities for? There are certain dynamics at play. Sometimes there is a need for a cause, flash mob, instant community. Does a community need a sense of permanence? Does it need a purpose? Geographic location: Michael Janz, need to build a fluidity. Realize the change and how communities transition. How do we bring people into the conversation? Need to design for evolution. The degree of commitment that people have to communities also plays a role. Progressive volunteerism? People can move in and out of roles in communities. What communities provide to its citizens change over time. What communities provides needs to be beneficial. Need to be proactive in community design. Individual design. Street parties are a different dynamic. What are the qualities of a community? Development of relationships. How we treat each other - with respect, recognize the need for fluidity. What do we share together in the community? What's in it for me? The community needs to feed the individual needs and vice versa. There's different forms of connection. Need to provide value and engage people. Community conversation can drive involvement. Need to increase the intrinsic value of an online community. High levels of trust vs low levels of trust. What is the incentive to be involved or to communicate? What is the return to participate? There are benefits of being involved in a community. Incentive and benefits are different from each other. We're here to see how to drive the conversation. There's no true neutrality. People/communities don't communicate what they are doing. Avoid duplication.
