Session C1

From $1

Session Topic: Designing www.toronto.ca/opendata -- What data? What apps?
Convenors: Ryan Merkley, Office of Mayor David Miller, City of Toronto and
Suzanne Long, Web Centre, City of Toronto

Recorder(s): Will Pate, Denis Carr and Marina Reckzin (photographs)
Participants: Lots (thanks participants!)

---------------------------

The intent behind this session was to get at what data or information people thought was held by the City of Toronto and then to see what types of uses they might want to make of this data. All of the whiteboard photos and a few related images have been up on Flickr since Sunday morning, early. http://www.flickr.com/photos/suzannelong/sets/72157612965730040/. Almost all of this is Creative Commons licensed. Enjoy. And I'd prefer to use open.toronto.ca as the place where new City of Toronto web applications and features might be shared in a public beta. What has to Happen Next?

--------------------------

Notes from the subsession recorded by Denis Carr. This is copied from here on my blog. These notes are based from memory and the photos I took, here on Flickr

I think I've posted almost all, if not all of the ideas at Google Moderator in case we want to use that to vote them up/down, comment, etc? (@christaggart)

Tags, Geocoding, Ontologies

A common theme of discussion was providing ways to organize the data. In particular:

  • geocode,
  • geocode by tag: e.g. “the annex”
  • tagged by topic; i.e. that this is an orthogonal axis to geocoding
  • metadata
  • we should look to how other cities have organized data to find a common vocabulary

A common concept was that we could use tags / geocodes to:

  • spontaneously form communities around ideas
  • track related issues
  • form feeds on related information
  • use to query related information that would generally be spread widely

I am posting 7 video clips of this session (which were taken on my camera by Vanessa Anderson) to my userpage: GillianK. If someone would like to edit them or post them somewhere else (e.g., Youtube), feel free. I also have a userpage called Gillian but please ignore it - I have been locked out; despite several password resets I can't log in to changecamp under that username.

I still think it would be great to have a more sustained conversation on this subject, so I've started a new google group: http://groups.google.com/group/toronto-opendata Right now I'm the only member! If other people think this is a good idea, maybe indicate here on the wiki, or by emailing me directly (my info's on my user page), or just by signing up for the group. thanks for a great session, everyone!
